What We’ve
Been Up To

Check out one of our latest design adventures with this bold kitchen renovation. The original kitchen posed a number of spatial challenges—a severe lack of counter space, insufficient storage, and an awkward layout that required an undersized fridge and gas range to be squeezed into a tight space. Our solution: add an additional line of cabinetry to double the amount of counter space and storage. Integrating the range into the new line of cabinetry freed up enough space to accommodate a full sized refrigerator and a full-height pantry in it’s previous location. The new location of the range also allows the addition of an externally vented hood, which the kitchen previously lacked.

While we typically advise against moving load-bearing walls due to costs and logistics, these particular circumstances warranted it. The previous kitchen size and lack of counter/storage space was a major drawback to an otherwise spacious 4BR house. While moving the wall back took away 30” in the neighboring bedroom, it’s still a great size for an office or small bedroom. Knowing what the average buyer is looking for in a 4BR home, this was a calculated sacrifice that will inevitably have a great return on investment.

When it comes to aesthetics, the homeowner is a fan of bold statements. The house is a 1924 bungalow that combines period details with tastefully contemporary updates, so theyy wanted a design that stood out while giving a nod to the past. The slim profile of the cabinet stiles takes the traditional shaker design of early 20th century kitchens and refines for a modern look. The black hexagonal flooring—an enlarged version of the traditional hexagonal pennytile found in turn of the century homes—was kept from the previous design for cost savings, with black hardware to tie it all together. A neutral backsplash of elongated vertically stacked tiles offers a clean, updated rendition of traditional subway tiles. Open shelving and statement tile define a focal wall to give the design that extra personality that the homeowner desired.
