LICENSED PORTLAND REALTOR + ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER

Reared in small-town Indiana by a family of logic-minded engineers, educated by eccentric big-city architects, and befriended by a diverse group of Portland creatives—I take pride in my eclectic combination of Midwestern friendliness and urban grit. Fun-loving, yet industrious. Energetic, yet easy-going. I have a tenacious drive to win for my clients, but always do so with a calm demeanor and a sense of compassion. Walking these fine lines allows me to deliver one of the finest levels of service in the Portland real estate industry without compromise. I like to do things a little differently around here—ditching the cliché salesperson nonsense and focusing instead on what I do best: community building, education, and creative problem solving…with a little extra flare for good measure!

· AWARD WINNING DESIGNER
· PORTLAND FAN GIRL
· RETIRED ROLLER DERBY SKATER
· ADULT SUMMER CAMP FOUNDER
· DOG LOVER

These are a few of my favorite things…

When you partner with a Realtor, you end up spending a lot of time together. Come for the superb guidance, stay for the good times! I love that so many of my clients choose to work with me not only for my top-notch expertise, but also because we share similar values and ethics. Her'e’s a little bit about me!

  • While I’m a huge fan of contemporary architecture and design, there’s a special place in my heart for the warmth and character of older homes. Portland is a city full of adorable bungalows, Craftsmen, Tudors, and Mid-Century beauties—all which bring a unique set of quirks and challenges to go along with the charm. Working with older and historic structures is a different kind of challenge that I find particularly exciting.

  • I wholeheartedly believe that Portland has some of the best food in the country! Here’s my rundown of some of my favorites spots:

    › Special Occasion: Le Pigeon
    › Sandwich: Lottie & Zula’s
    › Brunch: Honey Milk
› Cocktails: Expatriate (get the nacho’s too!)
    › Brewery: Breakside
    › Wine: Les Caves
› Dim Sum: Din Tai Fung
    › Asian Fusion: Oma’s Hideaway
› Thai: Thai Seasons on Sandy
    › Tacos: La Taq
    › French: La Moule
› Coastal: The Riverhouse Nestucca in Pacific City
    › Sushi: Bluefin at 14th & Broadway
› Beer Bar: Tiny Bubble Room
    › Indian: Siri

  • As a real estate professional, I feel that I have special responsibility to fight against the systemic racism that our industry has actively reinforced. Historic wrongdoings such as redlining and predatory lending practices deprived Black people of the valuable opportunity to build wealth through homeownership. To this day, bias on the part of real estate professionals still exists and disproportionately impacts BIPOC and their access to housing. As a result, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the median wealth of a white household was $188,200, while the median wealth of a Black household was just $24,100 in 2019—with inequities in homeownership being a significant factor in the disparity of wealth.

With this in mind, I have pledged to donate $100 from each sale to Taking Ownership PDX, an organization that repairs and renovates Black-owned homes to prevent displacement and keep generational wealth in the black community through homeownership.

  • Some of the best times in my life were spent at summer camp as a child. As a teenager/young adult, I worked in various positions at my beloved Camp Carson. I loved every minute of it! I always dreamed of having my own camp as an adult, so one day I teamed up with a few old friends back in Cincinnati and created a camp for adults. Think: all the best parts of children’s summer camp but with better food, better music, and no bedtime. I’ve since passed off the reigns to focus on my Portland community, but you never know…perhaps one day you’ll see me whipping up a Portland version =)
(side note: if you are interested in helping me host a city-wide color war…please reach out!)

  • Once upon a time, many broken bones and torn ligaments ago, skating was a huge part of my life. Beyond the physical skills gained, I worked on the marketing, PR, and event planning for my nationally-competitive team. At the height of it all, we were drawing in thousands of ticketholders per game! I’ve since moved on to safer hobbies, but the personal growth I experienced over the course of my roller derby career was priceless.

  • Don’t let my laid-back, free-spiited demeanor fool you—I’m a full blown Type A personality behind the scenes. I’m incredibly systematic when it comes to my business processes. In other words, I make spreadsheets for EVERYTHING!

  • After volunteering for many years at the Oregon Humane Society and “borrowing” my friends dogs for days on end, I one day came across my greatest 4-legged pal. Gustavo (aka Gustavo von Ruffenkamp…see what I did there?!) is the friendliest little guy and is always available for client meetups upon request!

  • In my past career in architecture, I worked on everything from high end residences to gigantic Nike Flagship stores and world class interactive museums (like The Australian Center For The Moving Image). Through the years, I became fascinated with the idea of spatial storytelling and experience design. I carry those fundamentals with me as a listing agent, where I aim to create a true experience for prospective buyers at every touch point and am always looking for immersive, multi-sensory art experieces as creative fuel.

  • Walking around Portland neighborhoods in the spring when everyone’s gardens start blooming brings me SO MUCH JOY. If you would have told me 15 years ago while I was living in a Manhattan midrise apartment that I would one day WANT to do yard work, I would have told you to get outta town! Once I bought my first home, though, it became a great creative outlet for me. Gardening has taught me a lot about careful planning, but also being able to roll with the punches when unexpected challenges arise. There’s always a solution, you just need to find it (aphids, get off my lawn!)

  • With years of design education and professional practice under my belt, I’m well-versed in my abilities to design in an array of styles and aesthetic sensibilities. When working with sellers, I always keep the target buyer demographic in mind for every aesthetic decision. With the said, if you love fun, unapologetically bold interiors…we’ll probably get along fabulously! Some of my favorite home designers and brands include:
    · Blockshop Textiles
    · Hay
    · Muuto
    · Quiet Town
    · Industry West
    · Sarah Sherman Samuel
    · Studio Proba
    · Happy Habitat
    · And so much more!

About

Gustavo von

Ruffenkamp

JUNIOR BARKITECT

Gustavo joined The Portland Hearthbeat team as an intern at just 12 weeks old, with absolutely no marketable skills and an inability to stay awake for more than 30 minutes at a time. He would cry when the boss left the room and one time ate a computer cord. Despite his ruff start and lack of opposable thumbs, he has proven his value as an expert relationship builder with a keen ability to melt hearts and make everyone question how it’s possible for a chihuahua to not be a jerk. In due time, once he honed his skillset of not pooping on rugs during client calls, Gustavo was promoted to Junior Barkitect, where he utilizes his unique perspective on the streets and ability to sniff out the best deals.

Gustavo finds inspiration in the work of the many great barkitects who have come before him: Mies van der Ruff, Frank Grrrrrry, and Barkminster Fuller, to name a few.

· BIG NAME, LITTLE GUY
· LOVER OF BONES
· EXPERT NAP TAKER
· MAIL SLOT SUPERVISOR

Design
Foundations

I’ve been a creative thinker ever since I can remember, spending hours every day as a kid drawing floor plans of dream houses since the age of seven. My parents leaned into my passion and kindly let me take over entire rooms of the house with my “projects”, where I would build out spaces for my Barbies, G.I Joes, and Trolls (shout out to my fellow 80’s babies!). When it came time for my first career day in first grade, where we could choose any profession that we wanted, I chose Artist…because I was too embarrassed to tell the teacher that I didn’t know how to spell Architect and Artist also started with an “A”—close enough!

I’ve come a long way since then, with the help of modern technologies like spell check, and eventually went on to graduate first in my class from The University of Cincinnati’s top-ranked School of Architecture & Interior Design. I remember my first studio professor in our first lecture standing in front of the class, “If I wanted to, I could design a house that would make a couple want to file for divorce.”. Uhh…ok, I thought, “Well this guy’s a sociopath. Cool".

Before long, though, I understood. Design isn’t just about making things look pretty (although I DO get excited about that part, too!)—it’s about using space to create solutions to life’s daily challenges, encourage positive human interaction, and bring a sense of comfort and stability into the inhabiter’s life. It’s also about making sure buildings don’t fall down or burst into flames, but I like to save those conversations for rendez-vous in creepy basements during home tours.

I spent 12+ years working in the design field designing everything from high-end residence to interactive museums. In my early 20’s, I participated in a design co-op program that had me moving around constantly. Over the span of four years, I lived and worked in SF, NYC, D.C, Cincinnati, and Copenhagen. It was an extremely formative experience, but I knew it was time to settle down when I found myself yearning over a set of plates in the “impulse buy” kiosk at an Old Navy checkout counter. I couldn’t buy them, because I knew I’d just need to get rid of them in 3 months when it came time to fly off to my next adventure. And as silly as it sounds, I couldn’t stop thinking about those plates. That’s when I realized that it was time for me to make a real home—a place to make my own.

I’ve now lived in a total of 17 different dwellings—yes, SEVENTEEN. If there’s one thing that has taught me, it’s that our physical living spaces absolutely impact our daily habits, routines, and overall lifestyles. To this day, I carry that insight with me as I help my client’s navigate the process of finding their perfect-for-them home. While a luxury abode won’t buy you happiness, a home that makes you feel unsafe, vulnerable, frustrated, or stressed surely can put a cloud over everything. My design background gives me a keen understanding of the impact of often overlooked details in one’s living space. With knowledge as power, I’m not personally interested in designing houses that will lead couples to divorce (because I’m not a SOCIOPATH!)—I’m determined to use my design superpowers for good to help my people find homes that will support their hopes, dreams, and needs while sprinkling moments of delight into their daily routines. And yeah…also houses that won’t fall down or burst into flames (please don’t waive your home inspection, folks).
